A software update has been announced and local lawmakers are calling for the cars to be pulled from the streets of Atlanta after multiple reports have been documented of Waymo driverless cars going around school busses.
In videos shared by Atlanta Public Schools, the driverless cars can be seen ignoring the stop signs and flashing lights on busses on six occasions this fall, 11Alive reports. No accidents have been reported so far.
Waymo previously announced a software update aimed at increasing the safety of the vehicles around busses, among other updates, but incidents have continued to occur in other cities like Austin, Texas, after the update took place, according to a letter from their school district. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigated the cases.
In Georgia, state Sen. Rick Williams, who co-wrote Addy's Law which increased penalties for passing school buses, told 11Alive he won't wait for the next legislative session to begin working on new laws that could address autonomous vehicle concerns.
Waymo safety officials said the company would issue a voluntary software recall to make necessary fixes, although "Waymo experiences twelve times fewer injury crashes involving pedestrians than human drivers," the company said in a statement to news outlets.
So what should you do if you see a Waymo car making a dangerous driving choice?
How to report dangerous driving from inside a Waymo car
If you are a passenger in a driverless Waymo car and you feel your personal safety or security is threatened, you've been involved in an accident, or the Waymo pulled over either on its own or has been pulled over by police, you can contact Waymo support through the screen inside the vehicle or through the Waymo app.
In an emergency, you can call 911 on your phone directly or through the Support app inside the car or on your phone.
After calling 911, the Waymo will remain stationary until emergency personnel arrive, and the car may communicate with those outside the vehicle through an external speaker system.
If the car was involved in a collision, a Waymo Roadside Assistance team will be dispatched and emergency services may be automatically called.
Non-emergency feedback can also be given by riders at any time through the "feedback" section in the app. Here, riders can report driving behavior, interactions with pedestrians or cyclists, and what the company calls "unprotected turns." Riders can also rate their ride at the end of every trip and leave comments.
Can you report dangerous Waymo driving you see from another vehicle?
If you have observed a Waymo vehicle making a dangerous driving decision but were not inside the car, you can still report the incident to Waymo.
For non-emergency reports, a contact form found in Waymo help material will ask when and where an incident took place and will ask you to describe what happened. You can ask the company to follow up with you to discuss the issue.
If you see a Waymo involved in an emergency such as a collision with another vehicle or pedestrian, contact 911 as you would for any other motorist.
