A popular brand’s tomato bisque kits are being recalled.

On Aug. 12, Kettle Cuisine LLC issued a recall of its Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kits after the company’s routine testing returned a “presumptive positive result” for Listeria, per an announcement from the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious infections in healthy people, and severe or fatal infections in young children, elderly people, those with compromised immune systems or otherwise at-risk individuals.

Symptoms of the illness can include a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria especially poses a risk to pregnant people, as it can also cause miscarriages or stillbirths.

To date, Kettle Cuisine LLC has not received any reports of illnesses in connection with its tomato bisque kits.

The affected product is Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit – 14 oz., which was distributed to 29 states across the country. The product, packaged in a wrapped tray and bearing a product description label, is exclusively sold at Walmart.

The FDA advised anyone in possession of an affected product to not eat, serve, sell or distribute the item, and to dispose of it or return it to where it was bought for a refund. Additionally, consumers are advised to thoroughly clean anywhere in their home that may have come into contact with the product.

In this case, smell and appearance are not reliable indicators of whether the product is safe.

Any customer who has consumed the tomato bisque kit and is developing symptoms in line with listeriosis should contact a medical professional.
