As No Kings protests swept across the United States, Robert De Niro added to his criticism of Donald Trump. He called the US president “crazy.” The veteran actor framed the protests as a critical moment for American democracy. De Niro pointed to the scale of public turnout as a sign of political urgency.

Robert De Niro spoke with Al Sharpton on MS Now, shortly after participating in a No Kings protest on March 28. Reflecting on the demonstrations, De Niro said the movement could influence upcoming elections. “Our democracy is at stake, period. And this fool is taking it with the fools around him. It’s like a surreal dream; it’s crazy,” De Niro said. “We cannot let up until the midterms are resolved, and resolved for the right reasons. We cannot let up with this guy,” he added.

Robert De Niro further accused Donald Trump of attempting to “deflect” attention from the Epstein files, adding: “If I know anything, I know this guy will try anything because he’s crazy. He’s not well. He’s a damaged person, period. You’ve got to stand up.”

De Niro also described feeling encouraged by the scale of participation in the protests, though he remained cautious about expressing optimism. “I don’t want to say the word ‘hope’ again that things will get even better and stronger, but it’s the only way we’re going to get out of this,” he said.

Furthermore, at a separate press conference tied to the New York protest, Robert De Niro directly linked the movement’s slogan to Donald Trump. “When the crowds are chanting ‘no kings,’ what I’m hearing, as we all know, is ‘no Trump,’” he stated. He also added that no previous president had posed what he described as a similar threat, saying, “None, except Trump. He must be stopped, and he must be stopped now.”

No Kings protest, unified in opposition to Trump, focused on issues including immigration enforcement, healthcare access, environmental protections, gun control, and war funding.
