When the late Queen Elizabeth II jetted around the world, she did so in style, with world-class service, comfortable seats, and luxurious amenities, much like other royals.
But unlike other monarchs, during her lifetime, she visited a total of 117 countries. She made several specific requests, some of which were practical, while others were simply unusual.
Four years after her death in 2022, the Daily Mail has revealed several details about the late Queen’s flying habits and requests.
Queen Elizabeth’s In-Flight Requests Revealed
According to the outlet, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s flight routine began well before she boarded the jet. It often started with a pre-flight drink. A former flight attendant who worked for British Airways revealed how “Her Majesty tends to like a martini before her guests arrive.”
While the actual reason behind this routine remains unknown, the flight attendant Elizabeth Evans admitted to religiously serving drinks to the Queen before takeoff.
Further, a few air stewards also mentioned that they had to make sure the Queen had a bowl of sugar-free mints before takeoff and in her dressing room. She reportedly favoured Velamints which were launched in the U.S. in 1997. The publication also revealed that the late Queen was particular about her comfort.
While flight attendants were given specific instructions on how to care for the monarch, even her dresser was trained to make her bed on a flight. They said that “the Queen has her own pillows” that she brought to the flight without fail. To avoid jet lag, she made sure to get a good night’s sleep without disturbance.
In addition, the late Queen also brought her preferred brand of water to stay hydrated on the flight and beat jet lag. She always traveled with Malvern spring water. “The only thing the Queen requests to have wherever she is is Malvern water. She likes Malvern water, it’s refreshing and they usually take lots of it with her,” former royal spokesman Dickie Arbiter said.

Queen Elizabeth also ate barley sugar, in the form of hard-boiled sweets as her “secret weapon” to help adjust her body clock.
The Late Queen’s Unusual Culinary Habits
Meanwhile, although these in-flight routines and demands have often surprised readers, there were also stricter rules imposed by the late Queen.
In her daily life, particularly when it came to her culinary habits, Queen Elizabeth II imposed strict rules that had to be followed by staff and royal members at all times.
According to CBS News, royal family members are not allowed to eat onions, garlic, and shellfish due to odor and allergy-related causes. Further, it has been revealed that each member of the royal family was weighed before and after Christmas dinner.
It has also been revealed that the board game of Monopoly was strictly prohibited in the palace, for it was considered “too vicious.”
