Orphan Black: Netflix is about to bid farewell to one of its standout sci-fi series

With only two weeks left, the commitment to binge-watch the five-season Orphan Black is bold but its intriguing premise might get you to press that play button tonight.

The Pilot episode of this science-fiction thriller series follows Tatiana Maslany's Sarah Manning, a British con artist in Toronto, who assumes the identity of Police detective Beth Childs, who appears to be her doppelgänger, after witnessing her su*c*de. While Sarah hopes that her doppelgänger's identity and savings would secure a new life for her and her daughter, she eventually realizes that their uncanny resemblance is no coincidence.

As Season 1 progresses, Sarah discovers that she has many identical sisters, who (along with herself) are part of an illegal cloning experiment and are about to be killed by someone. This pushes Sarah into a high-stakes conspiracy and she discovers that she and her identical sisters were born under Project LEDA to various women by in vitro fertilization.

Without spoiling the storyline further, the initial seasons of Orphan Black do an impressive job in developing a tight premise that will certainly remind you of mind-bending and offbeat sci-fi thrillers such as Sense 8 and Counterpart.

With streaming services racing to produce the best thriller for their audiences, this Tatiana Maslany-led 2013 show will take you to the roots of the genre, where each second inches you closer to the larger conspiracy while you wait at the edge of your seat for the final reveal.

Like every great sci-fi title, Orphan Black relies on its exceptional cast, which mostly comprises Tatiana Maslany and her various characters. As a woman at the centre of an illegal cloning experiment, Maslany pulls off not one, not two but 11 different characters. The actress, who rose to prominence for playing multiple characters and deservedly won an Emmy & five Canadian Screen Awards, slips into each character with ease.

Despite 11 similar faces, Tatiana Maslany manages to keep each clone unique, with different speech patterns, accents, tics and physicality. Be it a British con artist looking for a way out with her daughter, a conventional soccer mom or a dangerous serial killer, Maslany's take on each 'clone' is impressive and makes this title a must-watch.

While the latter seasons do strain credulity in the world-building, Maslany's acting makes up for it. With Netflix about to axe this standout title from its library, it's the perfect time to step into Sarah's world and experience a mind-bending story filled with questions about identity and bodily autonomy.
