Buckingham Palace confirmed yesterday that King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to the U.S. later this month, from April 27 through 30. Today, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson revealed that King Charles will address a joint session of Congress on April 28.

“It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite His Majesty King Charles III, The King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to address a Joint Meeting of Congress,” Johnson posted on social media. “Our two nations share one of the most consequential partnerships in history, and together we will mark the historic milestone of America’s 250th year of independence.”

In the official letter to King Charles, dated today, Johnson—along with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries—write to the King that they would be “honored” to host him for this “historic event, which will celebrate the shared heritage and enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and the United States.”

Elsewhere in the letter, the Congressional leaders reference Queen Elizabeth II’s address to a Joint Meeting of Congress in 1991, where she spoke about a shared “spirit of democracy” between the U.S. and the UK.

The late Queen was the first British monarch to deliver a speech in the U.S. Congress. Her speech largely dealt with U.S.-British cooperation in the Gulf War, and according to reports at the time, she received three standing ovations and was interrupted by applause several more times during her 15-minute address.

The upcoming trip will be King Charles’s first State Visit to the United States as King; Queen Elizabeth II undertook four State Visits to the U.S. over the course of her reign: in 1957, 1976, 1991 and 2007. As Prince of Wales, Charles visited the United States 19 times.
