Kelly Ripa discussed the “painful,” but necessary dental procedure that caused her recent absence from Live With Kelly and Mark.
She needed gum graft surgery from brushing her teeth “too much.”
“I’m an over-brusher,” she admitted on the latest episode of her podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera.”
Kelly Ripa is coming clean on the invasive procedure that caused her recent absence from Live With Kelly and Mark. The television personality, 55, took some time off from the show because she needed gum graft surgery.
On the latest episode of her “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, Ripa revealed that this common daily habit led her to need the “painful” procedure.

“I’m an over-brusher,” she admitted. “I brush my teeth too much. It’s a good-bad habit, but I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums.”
Her guest, actress Michelle Buteau, said that the surgery “sounded painful,” to which Ripa replied: “It is.” She also wasn’t allowed to talk for ten days after the procedure, causing her to miss out on taping Live.
Ripa confessed to putting off the surgery for five years, though her dentist eventually convinced her to go through with it.

“The doctor was like, ‘Now you don’t have the luxury of time.’” she said.

On the July 27 episode of Live, Ripa’s husband and co-host Mark Consuelos explained the reason for his wife’s absence. Singer Kevin Jonas filled in for her.
“Kelly sends her love,” said Consuelos, who’s been married to Ripa since 1996.

“Kelly had a gum graft surgery,” he shared. “She’s doing well, she’s doing great. She’s not allowed to talk.”
“Wow, that’s gotta be the hardest thing that she’s ever done,” Jonas joked.
Still, Consuelos confirmed that the procedure was indeed “painful.” “She famously doesn’t feel pain,” he said of his wife. “But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.”
